Watching the World

There are a multitude of reasons why you would invest in a security monitoring system. Having a record of events at your home or business, monitoring for evidence of theft or criminal activity, and the peace of mind of being prepared should you need proof of a damaging act. We can provide a state-of-the-art security monitoring system and the means for you to utilize it effectively.

There Are Two Main Types of Communication Methods That Security Systems Use to Convey Video Streams

Coaxial

This is what the older, analog-style security camera systems use regarding the quality of audio/video, installation, and maintenance. Coaxial-based security systems lose out by a wide margin to IP-based security management systems. The only real advantage they possess over IP-based monitoring systems is initial cost. However, the cost of an IP camera system is nowhere near what it used to be, and the audio/video quality of the worst IP camera system is still better than the audio/video quality of the BEST coaxial system.

IP

Modern-day security systems utilize IP cameras. Installation of an ethernet system for IP video monitoring is far simpler than a coaxial installation, which requires running dedicated communications and power lines for each camera. IP cameras can utilize an existing network within a building to communicate with the NVR. With cameras capable of filming high-definition audio and video in both night and daytime conditions, the only real drawback is storage space for the video's larger file size.

Recording Equipment

A security monitoring system utilizes a DVR-Digital Video Recorder-for analog or an NVR-Network Video Recorder-for IP. Every camera in the system connects back to this central unit, either through a direct coax connection or an ethernet switch on your network.

Every unit has a listed number of cameras that it can support, as well as a maximum file storage for recorded videos. There is a lot of math to it, but basically, every camera in use at a given resolution produces file sizes of a given size per minute of recording.

There Are Three Main Factors to Consider When Choosing a Security Monitoring System

Coaxial or IP

It is our professional stance that there is very little reason to use coaxial camera systems in today's world short of maintaining one already in use. We do not encourage you to install a new analog camera system, as it will hardly be worth the money it will cost.

Camera Quantity

A single DVR or NVR can only record a set number of audio/video streams simultaneously. If you have a unit capable of supporting eight cameras and want 9, purchase a second unit to operate the extra camera. You must prepare a site plan for how many cameras you require and where to determine the best team to serve you.

Storage Limit

A single camera recording HD quality can store around 35 days' worth of continuous recording on a one terabyte hard drive. Running 12 cameras at the exact resolution will fill the same storage space in less than three days. The unit will start overwriting old footage once its storage capacity has been reached. Consider investing in a recording unit capable of accepting external storage expansions.

Final Considerations

You need to determine the following parameters of how you wish to operate your security system:

  1. How many cameras do you need to be operational at one time?
  2. The video resolution you want to record at.
  3. The length of time you want recordings to be kept before the NVR overwrites them with new footage.
  4. Do you want local storage only, or are you open to cloud-based storage for your security system?
  5. These are necessary to determine the security monitoring system components that are right for you.
