Surge Protection and Battery Backup

Surge Protection is a key and often overlooked facet of the protection of an electrical system. It is a multi-stage system that can be considered appropriately covered when installed at the electrical service and the point of application. At Elegant Electrical, we understand the importance of protecting electronic equipment from unwanted power surges or "spikes”. With our years of experience serving the St. Louis and St. Charles County area, we are committed to providing the best services to our clients. Contact us at (636) 896-5753.

Surge Protection

As discussed in our Repair Services section, power surges are responsible for significant damage to electrical appliances and components over time. Surge protective devices-SPD's-typically operate by absorbing and shunting any transient overvoltage on a line to the ground. You may be familiar with the typical power strip style surge protectors, but there are SPD's which provide coverage for an entire building as well. These can continually offer surge protection up to an advertised threshold before requiring replacement. They form a part of a surge protection system with battery backups.

Battery Backup

An Uninterruptible Power Supply UPS, commonly known as a battery backups-are devices which contain an actual battery that is trickle charged while utility power is operational. When the power goes out, the storm kicks in instantaneously and keeps the devices plugged into it running until the battery runs out or utility power resumes. Many UPS also provide surge protection. Along with an SPD at your electrical service, they form a cohesive surge protection system for the electronics on your property. The battery in a UPS must be periodically tested and replaced as needed.

Power Surges Typically Occur in One of Two Ways:

Lightning Strikes

A single lightning strike contains ENORMOUS power. A direct lightning strike would destroy your electrical system with little regard to any protections you put in place. You are protecting against the transient voltage that travels through the utility lines from nearby lightning strikes.

Utility Surges

Your power utility often puts out tiny micro surges in power. Individually, they are minute, but depending on the quality of your power utility, they can be frequent. The cumulative effect this produces is detrimental to sensitive electronic equipment over time.

A complete surge protection system is necessary to safeguard your electronics and appliances adequately. In addition, utilizing a UPS allows you time to save any activity you were in the middle of and allows critical equipment like medical machines to continue operation in the event of a sudden power outage. Be prepared instead of being in need when the time comes.
